Vasco da Gama Cognitive Association -ACVG
Associação Cognitária Vasco da Gama (ACVG – Vasco da Gama Cognitive Association), originally the S. Jorge de Milréu Cognitive Association, was founded in 1997. Its main driving force was Professor Norberto Canha, an orthopaedic surgeon, retired professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and former chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Coimbra Hospitals. He was recognised for his dedication to neglected diseases, such as lymphatic filariasis, especially in Guinea-Bissau, and for his important civic work and work with the Portuguese Medical Association. The association is a non-profit institution with a mission to promote education, science and culture. Its objectives are to create and manage educational establishments, encourage scientific research and develop cultural and educational activities.
The ACVG began its journey with the restoration of the Monastery of S. Jorge de Milréu, a historic building in the municipality of Coimbra, where the Vasco da Gama University School (EUVG) was founded in 2000. The EUVG was a pioneer in private veterinary medicine education in Portugal and remains a benchmark in the Central Region today, focusing on veterinary sciences and excellence in training, with accredited and constantly evolving courses.
