Professor Ludgero C. Tavares, a faculty member at Escola Universitária Vasco da Gama (EUVG) and an integrated researcher at the Vasco da Gama Research Centre (CIVG), is Co-Guest Editor of the new book Mitochondria: The Diseases’
Cause and Cure (Biology 2025, 232 pp.). This scholarly work has been recently published in open access format (available as both hardback and ebook).
The book brings together a series of scientific articles that explore the crucial roles of mitochondria—beyond their well-known function in energy production—highlighting their involvement in cellular signalling, metabolic homeostasis and stress responses, as well as their impact on health and disease. Topics covered range from mitochondrial quality control in fertility and early-life programming to dysfunctions associated with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disorders, liver diseases and neurodegenerative pathologies. Special emphasis is placed on sex-specific mitochondrial responses, the developmental origins of mitochondrial health, and emerging therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial pathways.
The editorial “Beyond Powerhouses: Roles of Mitochondria, from Development to Therapeutic Potential” is co-authored by Prof. Ludgero C. Tavares and Dr. Susana P. Pereira (UCIBIO/NOVA), underscoring the international collaboration and scientific relevance of the publication.
This achievement represents an important milestone in EUVG’s scientific contribution to the field of mitochondrial biology and translational biomedical research
